Rummikub

Originally invented in 1930 by Ephraim Hertzano.

The project reimagines Rummikub with a focus on material and form. Shapes were simplified, proportions tested, and each element considered as part of one coherent system of tiles, rack, and box. The tiles were central to the process, explored in different thicknesses, edges, and finishes. The final design is smooth, balanced, and comfortable to hold, with clear numbers and calm yet distinct colors. The numbers are clearly legible, distinguished by color, yet remain consistent with the restrained overall design.

The racks were developed in parallel. They are milled from solid aluminum, a material that provides both precision and stability. Their weight keeps them fixed on the table, while the tiles fit with accuracy into the slots, sliding in and out without resistance. The restrained geometry emphasizes the contrast between the cool metallic body and the colorful tiles, creating a balanced relationship between the two parts.

For storage, a semi-transparent box was designed that accommodates both racks and all tiles. The construction allows the pieces to be placed inside quickly after playing and retrieved just as easily. The transparency gives a light character to the box while leaving the contents partly visible, keeping the whole set compact and consistent in its language.
