Omio
Connected charging station for private use
Swarm intelligence as the foundation of the charging network
Omio is based on the idea that lots of small private charging stations can add up to one large network that keeps growing. Households open their wallbox to others and earn some extra income, which lets charging infrastructure spread faster and more flexibly than central planning allows, especially in rural areas and neighborhoods without public chargers.
App Design
In the Omio app, drivers and private operators meet in one network. Drivers see which stations are available, reserve one and check live data on price, power and status, while operators share their station, set prices and manage energy use, with billing handled automatically. Connected to a smart home system, the app can charge cars with surplus solar power instead of feeding it into the grid.
Physical Product Design
On the charging station itself, a slightly curved top lets rainwater run off, LED strips along the edges show the charging status from a distance, and a display in the center gives live data and feedback.
Perforated side panels cool the electronics passively during high charging loads and are built directly into the shape of the housing.
Ecological and Economic Benefits
Using solar power straight from the roof for charging raises how much of it a household uses itself and takes pressure off public grids.
Operators, on the other hand, can earn money with a wallbox that would otherwise only charge their own car, with flexible pricing and automatic billing built in.
