Rummikub

Redesign of the classic tile game

Rummikub was invented by Ephraim Hertzano in 1930, and in my redesign I treated tiles, racks and box as one set that should look like it belongs together. Most of the work went into the tiles, which I tested in different thicknesses, edge radii and finishes until they felt good in the hand. The numbers are large and easy to read, and the four colors are distinct enough to tell apart at a glance without clashing with the rest of the set.

Alongside the tiles I developed racks milled from solid aluminum. Their weight keeps them from sliding around on the table, and the tiles slide in and out of the slots without catching. Next to the cool metal, the colors of the tiles stand out even more.

For storage I designed a semi-transparent box that holds both racks and all tiles. Packing up after a game takes only a moment, and since the box is partly see-through, you can still make out the colorful tiles inside.
