Water harvesting from air

Line art of a modern shade dew collector

For a university design project, I developed a dew collector that harvests water from the air through natural condensation. It’s meant as a compact, lightweight extra water source for emergencies or longer outdoor trips.

Throughout the semester I met regularly with Professor Melzer to rework the design step by step. One of the main requirements was that the collector had to fit into a backpack without losing efficiency.

A central tube carries a surface that unfolds like an upside-down umbrella, giving the dew as much area as possible to collect on, and the water runs down into a bottle placed underneath.

Polished metal junction with converging arms on a gray pole.

At the end of the project I built a working prototype with my 3D printer at home and the university workshop, and it showed that the concept works in practice. After several rounds of changes over the semester, I presented it in the final review.
